Through the Looking Glass
Nature Photographers Network 2006 Photo Art Image of the Year
Easily the highest honor of my photographic experience was receiving the Image of the Year award for this photo. I regularly snoop around in our garden for interesting subjects. On this particular morning I noted the bedewed spider web sparkling in the early sun. There was a partially spent milkweed plant directly behind it. However there was much too great a distance between the main subjects to get them both in focus on one exposure even with maximum depth of focus. I proceeded to shoot one sharp image of the web, one on the flower and one somewhere in between to provide a color wash. I combined the images in Photoshop and played with different opacity settings to get this final result. This is an example of how even mundane subject matter can produce a pleasing and successful image.
