Going It Alone

Nature Photographers Network Editor's Pick

Naturescapes Image of the Week

I am a latecomer to digital capture. Because I own a small fortune in Minolta lenses and accessories my digital SLR options were and still are somewhat limited. A few days before our trip to Colorado in 2005 I bought a then brand new Canon S2 IS. I literally was reading the owner's manual and experimenting on the drive from Texas. This was one of the first images from the new camera. I took it with me on a whim while on my first scouting trip in Great Sand Dunes National Park It was getting to be late afternoon and some of the dramatic shadows that make the dunes so fascinating were starting to come out. I spotted this solitary figure setting out into the great expanse of the dunes and instinctively took the shot. It was the only one I kept. For me there is much spiritual symbolism in the shot. Go here for one of those interpretations.
